after scaring the inlaws by !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , at least I found a (hopefully) easily resolved issue of two broken solder connections
the bad news, monkee is as adept at soldering as I am at not scaring my inlaws

Yup, easy fix. That also looks like a prime candidate for learning to use a soldering iron since it’s got nice wide solder pads and apparently no temperature-sensitive IC parts. Go for it.

Good opportunity to use a de-soldering kit! Don’t just slather new solder over an old problem, fix it right!

heating it to get the broken wires out of the hole was the most frustrating part.
But once the holes were clear I just used the existing solder in place and ran new wires through.
I’m plugging it in this afternoon to test, hopefully it all works.
